Helmet Safety
Ride Smart, Wear a Helmet
On the first day of the 2004 National Finals Rodeo, Delores Toole made barrel
racing history. No, she didn't break any records or win first place. She did
wear a helmet into the arena, the first competitor to do so.
Recently several long standing CGA riders have been seen wearing helmets for
the first time. Unfortunately, this is often the result of watching another
rider sustaining an injury.
Each year, roughly 70,000 people are treated in emergency rooms because of equestrian-related
injuries. Tens of thousands more are treated in physician's offices. Head injuries
account for about 20 percent of emergency room visits and are the leading cause
of hospitalizations and death. Studies published in the professional journals
"Injury" and "Pediatrics" concluded that "a significant
decrease in those admitted with head injuries is associated with the increasing
use of protective helmets."
Safety is the prime directive in all rules within CGA. Below are some harrowing
stories and some amazing recoveries associated with preferring the fashion of
a hat over the safety of a helmet.
